Mỵ Nương, an extremely pretty daughter of the 18th King of the Hồng Bằng Dynasty. She grew and became a woman and the king wants find his daughter an outstanding husband. The husband needed to be handsome but also talented for his beloved daughter. The King chose 2 fantastic men: Sơn Tinh (The Lord of the Mountains) and Thuỷ Tinh (The Lord of the Sea).

They both showed their powers. With a wave of a hand, Sơn Tinh grew trees and created a forest meanwhile Thuỷ Tinh made wind blow. Sơn Tinh said a word, mountains rose up from the ground and Thuỷ Tinh made the tides grow everytime he speaks a word.
The King was stuck with a difficult choice between these 2 talented men. Finally, he gave them a task instead and whoever brings the required items to him first wins. The items included a nine-tusk elephant, a nine-mane horse and a nine-spur cock.
The next morning, Sơn Tinh brought all the required items to the king first and was able to bring Mỵ Nương home. Thuỷ Tinh came a few minutes later and found that Mỵ Nương was gone and got very furious and terrifying.

Thuỷ Tinh and his troops were all trying to steal Mỵ Nương from Sơn Tinh. Using his powers, he rose the water higher and higher but at the same time, Sơn Tinh was rising the mountains to block the high water. Thuỷ Tinh's water wasn't very effective against Sơn Tinh but it was to people living in towns because Thuỷ Tinh had flooded them and lands for resources.
Eventually, Thuỷ Tinh stopped and withdrew his water. Although he stopped, he did not give up on Mỵ Nương and strikes again every year.
